Boron is an essential micronutrient for plant growth that may be naturally present in water. It aids in the formation and strengthening of plant cell walls. It also has a positive role in the update of potassium and phosphorous in many plants. To determine the amount of boron available, this test adjusts the sample to a known pH value near 7.8. Since boron is a weak acid, the addition of a mannitol reagent forms a complex that acts as a strong acid. The number of drops of an alkaline reagent required to return the sample to the starting pH value corresponds with the boron concentration in the sample.
